ORDER: Blueberry pandan

VALUE: Yes, 100%

One of the best foods in Singapore is undeniably HDB pandan waffles (with blueberry, in my case). This was a second pregnancy craving that saw me tour the country for the perfect blend of fragrance (forget Famous Amos, these guys are where the free smells are at), mochi chew and crunch on a bite. The winner for me was Levure Naturelle's (Tanjong Pangar MRT).

I can offer no photos of the waffle in its folded green glory becauae I always bite into it before I take a picture. This is a no regrets carb + sugar + fat + nostalgia treat.

As an aside, and to add credibility (or not) to my waffle lovingness, I nailed 8 1/2 waffles on the other end of the spectrum just last night. I love the waffle party at /Zen. Despite feeling about banana in food like many people do about pineapple on pizza, I can never get enough of the banana caramel they serve their amazing waffles with. Well, I lie. I tap out at 8 1/2 (personal best!), but I know someone has managed 18 of these lovehearts.

T (June '23) SCORE: Bring yo' friends. Great omakase and they are going to start a la carte ORDER: Omakase with the shabu shabu (dinner) VALUE: Good for high end Japanese, but not cheap. Probably about $550 with drinks. It was about $200 for a teetotal lunch I've always loved Japan (and, I know, I know, who doesn't?). One of my closest friends growing up is Japanese and she took me to Disneyland when I was 18. We went a little nuts that trip and I ended up selling worn underthings to fund a return trip home (or possibly an MD stereo, it was either or and I had to have both). I've resisted some of the obsessions others I know have - I like the teas but lack the zen to whip my own, I like kakigori but prefer bingsu, I enjoyed Tsukiji but actually like it more now... sacrilege, I know. One thing I do struggle to resist though, is a value-for-quality omakase. I realise that this is not the usual term to employ but I appreciate the results of the hidden hand...

T (June '23) SCORE: Suck it and see. Definitely worth trying, but may not be quite as good as the hype suggests. Embrace butter. A lot of the magic is in the team. Acoustics can be tricky ORDER: smoked quail egg is a signature and no one does it as well | grissini is excellent | duck hearts 100% the best dish | garlic shoots | the leeks if the crockery changes back | crab leg | turbot | butterhead with the steaks | berry tart | marshmallow | pineapple upside down cake | sausage roll from the bakery | negronis VALUE: If you are easy on the booze, it is better than you would expect for the brand, quality and demand. Assume $350/head with a couple of glasses of wine, though if omakase and pairing this gets to around $700 There aren't many places I consciously visit more than twice a year in Singapore.
