ORDER: Small or two mini bingsu if for 1. I liked the sesame

VALUE: Yes - dinner and dessert for $30/head

A couple of my friends had posted pictures of happy people eating Bingsu at /HanBingCafe in Serene Centre, so when my date's meeting ran over and we missed the start of the film at Sunset Cinema, we thought we would give it a shot. First thing to know... it is tiny. Probably 16 covers and bingsu is a rare, popular thing. It is also very kawaai (or the Korean equivalent). Case literally in point:

My friend was horrified to hear that I had never had Army Stew (carbs!) and so we gave that, and the mala gyoza a go...

The stew was alright, essentially a kimchi soup with noodles and spam, and I was disappointed by a lack of burn from the gyoza. This was all about preference though, and I can see why a small cafe would keep it simple.

In any case, I was there for the bingsu and it was well worth a try. There was a large range, and each option was available in three sizes. The Injeolmi ans black sesame were well worth the calories ans I would definitely go back.

Now, I was expecting the bingsu to be the star of the show but, nope, not at all. The star of the show, and a real reason to visit, is Jess, the high energy, super-amicable server. Don't take it from me, just check out the fan wall...

In a country of demanding customers and ambivalent service, this kind of fandom is fantasy level. Yet, I found myself deliberately heading into a review site to complement her today. She is seriously fantastic. Go for bingsu and Jess.

T (June '23) SCORE: Bring yo' friends. Great omakase and they are going to start a la carte ORDER: Omakase with the shabu shabu (dinner) VALUE: Good for high end Japanese, but not cheap. Probably about $550 with drinks. It was about $200 for a teetotal lunch I've always loved Japan (and, I know, I know, who doesn't?). One of my closest friends growing up is Japanese and she took me to Disneyland when I was 18. We went a little nuts that trip and I ended up selling worn underthings to fund a return trip home (or possibly an MD stereo, it was either or and I had to have both). I've resisted some of the obsessions others I know have - I like the teas but lack the zen to whip my own, I like kakigori but prefer bingsu, I enjoyed Tsukiji but actually like it more now... sacrilege, I know. One thing I do struggle to resist though, is a value-for-quality omakase. I realise that this is not the usual term to employ but I appreciate the results of the hidden hand...

T (June '23) SCORE: Suck it and see. Definitely worth trying, but may not be quite as good as the hype suggests. Embrace butter. A lot of the magic is in the team. Acoustics can be tricky ORDER: smoked quail egg is a signature and no one does it as well | grissini is excellent | duck hearts 100% the best dish | garlic shoots | the leeks if the crockery changes back | crab leg | turbot | butterhead with the steaks | berry tart | marshmallow | pineapple upside down cake | sausage roll from the bakery | negronis VALUE: If you are easy on the booze, it is better than you would expect for the brand, quality and demand. Assume $350/head with a couple of glasses of wine, though if omakase and pairing this gets to around $700 There aren't many places I consciously visit more than twice a year in Singapore. My aversion to price insanity and preference for interesting dishes unlike what I've had before means I get bored pretty quickly unless there are regular menu refreshe...
