ORDER: Breakfast Quesadilla, spicy bloody mary

VALUE: Yes - 20€ for 2 cocktails and a giant breakfast scramble, and smoked salmon

After a night out in amsterdam having one too many beers and jenevers at the neighbourhood hole-in-the-wall beer spot (oude Werfe) I was in need of some good comforting hangover food. You know the type, greasy, satisfying, moderately carby and punchy. This spot fits all of those and then some, regardless of what you order.

I had their breakfast quesadilla, which I thought was an interesting thing to try because everything else was too... british (fry ups and avocado toasts) and me being brown wanted something a bit more... flavorful

Do not expect quick service when you're here, because they take their own sweet time with everything, and are very blunt about it when you try to ask any questions. A (still drunk) hen party showed up at the outdoor area when I was there, and they demanded a table outside. The waitress's response was a delightfully sassy "do you see a table? They are all eating. I can't make them eat any faster." Afterwards, I realized this was merely an indication of the speed of the service I was about to experience. There was one bachelor party in the house that took up 3 6-tops and thanks to them, and their 15 orders of british fry-up's, I had to wait a good 50 minutes before my food came. The friendly lady thought the ideal way to help me out was to keep asking if I wanted more bloody marys which I did, but didn't really help the hangover.


Towards the tail end of that wait, I was really starting to hope the food better be worth the wait. Luckily, the quesadilla was delicious, with scrambled eggs in the middle, and heaped with chorizzo crumbs and potato chunks. Think a chorizzo filled homestyle fries if you're familiar with american diner food. It was everything that I needed to continue my trek on to the next beer garden on a delightfully sunny and cool amsterdam afternoon

The place is packed and very tight, so if you need more space, I recommend an outdoor spot and a corner table at that. I also found out that they now have 2 locations, and I have been going to the newer of the locations, at Kaizergracht. The older one is at Singel, and i assume is just as good

T (June '23) SCORE: Bring yo' friends. Great omakase and they are going to start a la carte ORDER: Omakase with the shabu shabu (dinner) VALUE: Good for high end Japanese, but not cheap. Probably about $550 with drinks. It was about $200 for a teetotal lunch I've always loved Japan (and, I know, I know, who doesn't?). One of my closest friends growing up is Japanese and she took me to Disneyland when I was 18. We went a little nuts that trip and I ended up selling worn underthings to fund a return trip home (or possibly an MD stereo, it was either or and I had to have both). I've resisted some of the obsessions others I know have - I like the teas but lack the zen to whip my own, I like kakigori but prefer bingsu, I enjoyed Tsukiji but actually like it more now... sacrilege, I know. One thing I do struggle to resist though, is a value-for-quality omakase. I realise that this is not the usual term to employ but I appreciate the results of the hidden hand...

T (June '23) SCORE: Suck it and see. Definitely worth trying, but may not be quite as good as the hype suggests. Embrace butter. A lot of the magic is in the team. Acoustics can be tricky ORDER: smoked quail egg is a signature and no one does it as well | grissini is excellent | duck hearts 100% the best dish | garlic shoots | the leeks if the crockery changes back | crab leg | turbot | butterhead with the steaks | berry tart | marshmallow | pineapple upside down cake | sausage roll from the bakery | negronis VALUE: If you are easy on the booze, it is better than you would expect for the brand, quality and demand. Assume $350/head with a couple of glasses of wine, though if omakase and pairing this gets to around $700 There aren't many places I consciously visit more than twice a year in Singapore. My aversion to price insanity and preference for interesting dishes unlike what I've had before means I get bored pretty quickly unless there are regular menu refreshe...
