VALUE: Yes - lunch at $20/head

I've been intrigued by these Tanamera Coffee places ever since I had a coffee meeting at the CIMB building branch that promised an unexpected coffee and goreng pisang combination. I mean, that's really not a scone. On that occassion I also had a decent kueh lapis and doggy bagged some home for the mini-me. This fortnight, I unexpectedly have three meetings at Tanamera Coffee at Tanglin Mall, apparently destination a la mode for the Work from Home crowd. I wonder if there is free wifi.

Meeting #1 - lunch with a vegetarian. Key discovery - cold brew and a good tahu telor

I'm picky about fried egg dishes. A literally unhealthy obsession with Thai omelettes and the crispy fluff you can get on fish soup is a clue as to my preferences, and I struggle to find crispy egg that isn't 99% grease or soggy. Expectations were low, and I was pleasantly surprised! The peanut sauce had proper spice and there was a good tahu to egg ratio. It was priced low enough that I had (mistakenly) thought it was a snack, and so I had topped up with tempeh and tofu goreng, which was totally unnecessary. Would do this again.

T (June '23) SCORE: Bring yo' friends. Great omakase and they are going to start a la carte ORDER: Omakase with the shabu shabu (dinner) VALUE: Good for high end Japanese, but not cheap. Probably about $550 with drinks. It was about $200 for a teetotal lunch I've always loved Japan (and, I know, I know, who doesn't?). One of my closest friends growing up is Japanese and she took me to Disneyland when I was 18. We went a little nuts that trip and I ended up selling worn underthings to fund a return trip home (or possibly an MD stereo, it was either or and I had to have both). I've resisted some of the obsessions others I know have - I like the teas but lack the zen to whip my own, I like kakigori but prefer bingsu, I enjoyed Tsukiji but actually like it more now... sacrilege, I know. One thing I do struggle to resist though, is a value-for-quality omakase. I realise that this is not the usual term to employ but I appreciate the results of the hidden hand...

T (June '23) SCORE: Suck it and see. Definitely worth trying, but may not be quite as good as the hype suggests. Embrace butter. A lot of the magic is in the team. Acoustics can be tricky ORDER: smoked quail egg is a signature and no one does it as well | grissini is excellent | duck hearts 100% the best dish | garlic shoots | the leeks if the crockery changes back | crab leg | turbot | butterhead with the steaks | berry tart | marshmallow | pineapple upside down cake | sausage roll from the bakery | negronis VALUE: If you are easy on the booze, it is better than you would expect for the brand, quality and demand. Assume $350/head with a couple of glasses of wine, though if omakase and pairing this gets to around $700 There aren't many places I consciously visit more than twice a year in Singapore. My aversion to price insanity and preference for interesting dishes unlike what I've had before means I get bored pretty quickly unless there are regular menu refreshe...
