ORDER: Spicy 'nduja pizza

VALUE: Yes - 25€ for a pizza, a tiramisu, 2 glasses of beer and a grappa

I'm not sure if this is a common phenomenon, but sometimes when I'm traveling I end up craving specific things. These cravings may not necessarily be the best of that thing since it's not the region I'm in, but I'll try to find the best that that location has to offer. For instance, I was in amsterdam, and I started craving a good pizza. I suspect it was the subliminal messaging of walking past all those "new york pizza" signs walking in and around the old part of town. However, I didn't crave a new york style pizza, I wanted one with a nice base, nice crust, good sauce-to-dough ratio, and balanced but not overwhelming toppings.

Let's get right to it - this fit all that craving and then some. This was a hole in the wall type spot, with a couple tables outside, and a really REALLY cramped inside, was completely packed on a random Thursday evening. I asked for the spicy sausage pizza, and some beers while I waited. The food came out fairly quickly, and was hot and well made. It was delicious! The crust was so good I could eat it by itself, and it was moist enough that I didn't really need to dip it in olive oil to make it softer either. the sauce was tangy, but not overly so, and recognizing that the 'nduja bits were spicy, they didn't overwhelm the pizza with them, but rather dotted them atop what was ordinarily a classic margherita

I was told by the friendly server that if I came with friends I could put up to 2 sections of toppings and try multiple flavors, but me being me my first thought was, well if you had told me that before, I could have tried 2 different pizzas in one sitting. Nonetheless, this was exactly what I needed to ease my craving. I finished the meal with the only dessert they had that night, I suspect on weeknights they don't prepare any of the other desserts aside from the Tiramisu. The tiramisu was alright, but a touch too sweet for my liking. Also, quite frankly, not nearly boozy enough.

Definitely would come back here again, especially on a cold night, as a hot pizza and a beer work wonders when the temperature is below 15C.

T (June '23) SCORE: Bring yo' friends. Great omakase and they are going to start a la carte ORDER: Omakase with the shabu shabu (dinner) VALUE: Good for high end Japanese, but not cheap. Probably about $550 with drinks. It was about $200 for a teetotal lunch I've always loved Japan (and, I know, I know, who doesn't?). One of my closest friends growing up is Japanese and she took me to Disneyland when I was 18. We went a little nuts that trip and I ended up selling worn underthings to fund a return trip home (or possibly an MD stereo, it was either or and I had to have both). I've resisted some of the obsessions others I know have - I like the teas but lack the zen to whip my own, I like kakigori but prefer bingsu, I enjoyed Tsukiji but actually like it more now... sacrilege, I know. One thing I do struggle to resist though, is a value-for-quality omakase. I realise that this is not the usual term to employ but I appreciate the results of the hidden hand...

T (June '23) SCORE: Suck it and see. Definitely worth trying, but may not be quite as good as the hype suggests. Embrace butter. A lot of the magic is in the team. Acoustics can be tricky ORDER: smoked quail egg is a signature and no one does it as well | grissini is excellent | duck hearts 100% the best dish | garlic shoots | the leeks if the crockery changes back | crab leg | turbot | butterhead with the steaks | berry tart | marshmallow | pineapple upside down cake | sausage roll from the bakery | negronis VALUE: If you are easy on the booze, it is better than you would expect for the brand, quality and demand. Assume $350/head with a couple of glasses of wine, though if omakase and pairing this gets to around $700 There aren't many places I consciously visit more than twice a year in Singapore.
