I am only moderately ashamed that despite my best efforts, my children are fake foodies. They obsess over steak preparation videos on youtube, but one son doesn't like steak and the other only likes it well done (the shame...). They are hideously lazy eaters and dislike having to chew their food, such an impractical reality as far as they are concerned. Still, they resent that I don't often (ie never) take them to dinners with me, resulting in cuddle-less bedtimes for them. I tell them constantly that they wouldn't enjoy the food, but the youtube food porn convinces them otherwise, so when S and Y suggested we try the /Meadesmoore Dirty Burger, I thought I would let them give it a shot.

Having spent an age circling for parking, we eventually arrived at the restaurant where S and Y had ordered some pigs ears. My favourite remains the ones at Rebel Rebel, but now that they have taken that off menu, Meadesmoore is reigning champion. Even without an explanation of what they would be eating, the boys refused to even nibble the edge of one. Mama 1, YouTube 0.

Next to the table was the mac and cheese, S' favourite. This earned a nibble and had a 50/50 success rate - the older boy liked it enough to have a little, but the younger rejected it and destroyed a bowl of fries instead. I was surprised, to be honest. Mama 2, Youtube 0.

Then came the stars of the show - an onglet for the boys, who identified a smokiness I had taken for granted, and rejected the dish (which Y and I then finished off), and the dirty burger for the grown-ups. That was a heck of a burger. Foie gras on a cheese "fondue" over a wagyu patty in a potato bun. It was yummy but very heavy. Thankfully, it was served with a fresh salad that had a tart citrus dressing, which helped cut the fat. Still, there was a lot of fat involved and more of that acidity wouls have been helpful. The burger came with a glass of wine, which made the pricing palatable. Mama still 2, YouTube still 0.

All in, Meadesmoore continues to serve, particularly if you are over twelve years old. Also, mama does know best.

T (June '23) SCORE: Bring yo' friends. Great omakase and they are going to start a la carte ORDER: Omakase with the shabu shabu (dinner) VALUE: Good for high end Japanese, but not cheap. Probably about $550 with drinks. It was about $200 for a teetotal lunch I've always loved Japan (and, I know, I know, who doesn't?). One of my closest friends growing up is Japanese and she took me to Disneyland when I was 18. We went a little nuts that trip and I ended up selling worn underthings to fund a return trip home (or possibly an MD stereo, it was either or and I had to have both). I've resisted some of the obsessions others I know have - I like the teas but lack the zen to whip my own, I like kakigori but prefer bingsu, I enjoyed Tsukiji but actually like it more now... sacrilege, I know. One thing I do struggle to resist though, is a value-for-quality omakase. I realise that this is not the usual term to employ but I appreciate the results of the hidden hand...

T (June '23) SCORE: Suck it and see. Definitely worth trying, but may not be quite as good as the hype suggests. Embrace butter. A lot of the magic is in the team. Acoustics can be tricky ORDER: smoked quail egg is a signature and no one does it as well | grissini is excellent | duck hearts 100% the best dish | garlic shoots | the leeks if the crockery changes back | crab leg | turbot | butterhead with the steaks | berry tart | marshmallow | pineapple upside down cake | sausage roll from the bakery | negronis VALUE: If you are easy on the booze, it is better than you would expect for the brand, quality and demand. Assume $350/head with a couple of glasses of wine, though if omakase and pairing this gets to around $700 There aren't many places I consciously visit more than twice a year in Singapore. My aversion to price insanity and preference for interesting dishes unlike what I've had before means I get bored pretty quickly unless there are regular menu refreshe...
